This mode is defined by Peirce as Thirdness. Another

Dear Edwina,
we discussed in the ISSS Primer Wholeness Seminar at length the value of any
system may it be 2-log, 3-log or N-log (ical). Maybe you like: A Minimal
Fourfold System by Anthony Judge
at:http://www.newciv.org/ISSS_Primer/seminar.html

But let us now for the sake of your views above go and stick with the
Triadic Approach of PEIRCE.
I have found in PEIRCE's sign-theory another way not only to see and
interprete Icon and symbol in another context, or better shared context, by
pretending that the INDEX sign PEIRCE uses might make mcuh sense when
understood
metaphorical as a "pointer" sign or bridge between icons and symbols. I have
written more about this elsewhere, mut maybe you like this extract from
"knowmap":
http://benking.de/Global-Change/spatial-spacial.html

Please understand that there might be different ways to see the use and
quality of an "index". Maybe the idea to visulaize and understand as an
analgy
might help when we remember that PEIRCE was also a surveyor and so was able
to
bridge, map and model real objects and signs as well, maybe using the same
images to help him attachmeaning and usage. For me counts that with this use
of
the INDEX we can not only bridge the signs, but make practical use of the
different represenations.
More about this matter can be found in my discussion paper:

Best
