Dear Christophe,

I would say that the telephone line functions as the carrier system.

The signal is a specific event. The event changes both the carrying
system and the communicating system. After the event the probability
distributions of future events are changed in both systems of reference.

The signal (event) can be considered as part of the exchange and at the
same time as technically embedded in the carrying system. The two
systems of reference mutually inform each other (co-vary) in the signal,
but this covariation is only part of their further development as
probability distributions (variation = co-variation + remaining
variation). The two systems are coupled in the event, but develop
otherwise along their own respective axes.

With kind regards,

Loet
