Your pun does highlight the added aspect of 'contrived
purpose' to any complete-notion of what 'information'
might be included/present in any information-transfer
situation. But M.McLuhan was solely - though importantly -
identifying that there are dynamic qualities to the
-format- of whatever media is involved in information
conveyance ... that the format is not some passive inert
factor. And that systemic behaviors are impacted by the
nature and extent of the format qualia, not just by the
data sent/received. And that is independent of any
intentionality on the part of the sender ... though ...
now ... to consume and direct the focussed attention of
intended audiences -does- come into play now, when message
formats are designed.

E,g., the hyper-agitated speech and visuals of expose' news media,
quick-cut edits and the like; the transfer into more and more
graphic/auditory media - away from linear printed wording -
carriers a behavioral demand ... with resulting consequences,
that an audience doesn't realize is present: cross channeled or
covert information environments.

The form of a message is as powerful as the data messaged.

M.McLuhan was a critical thinker into the nature of information
environments ... seeing the fuller present dynamics of communcation
systems, not just its simple-tool role.
